This photograph, by coutesy of Peter Justin, is typical of the Sumail Gap north of Fanja, the main route south through the jebel and to Nizwa. Every village had fortifications, date palms and irrigation systems.
Until the construction of the 'black-top' roads, travel was on graded surfaces as seen on this picture.
